Outdoor lighting and projection mapping at Winter Light, in Llandudno North Wales.
An Illuminated backdrop to a unique theatrical parade
Here at Illuminated Events, we are very proud to have contributed our services to the highly successful and well received Llandudno Winter Light / Golau Gaeaf – Chapter 1.
This unique theatrical parade, drawing on the myths and legends of the Orme, took place on the streets of Llandudno to a complimenting backdrop of colourfully illuminated buildings and stunning outdoor projections.
Our role in the event was to create a backdrop of lighting and projections, at various locations along Mostyn Street so as to add an inviting, colourful atmosphere to the theatrical parade…… and from the highly positive feedback we received from members of the public, we think that the many thousands of people who attended the event enjoyed what they saw.
Outdoor projection mapping on M&S building at Llandudno Winter Light
As part of our undertakings for Llandudno Winter Light Chapter 1, the Art Deco architecture above Marks & Spencer on Mostyn Street was brought to life with projected imagery.
We set up our 20,000 lumen Barco HD projectors, positioned in windows above the Library and Victoria Shopping Centre on the opposite side of the road.
From this excellent location we had a good direct line of sight for projection mapping on to the full length of the building.
We edge blended multiple projectors to create a single huge image the full width of the building – and using simple projection mapping, we projected a series of images representing the mythical theme of the event, including an ox, a Viking ship, a mermaid and the bilingual Winter Light / Golau Gaeaf logo.
The outdoor building projection created a warm and inviting atmosphere for the audience gathered along Mostyn Street and provided a colourful backdrop to the Winter Light parade as it made its way through Llandudno.

St Johns Church like never seen before at Llandudno Winter Light
Just along Mostyn Street, the historic St John’s Church was brightly illuminated like never seen before, to create a rich and colourful illuminated backdrop to the parade as it made its way through the town.
The exterior walls and tower of St Johns Church were up-lit in rich shades of blue and green.
We used our I-Pix and Studio Due weatherproof LED up lighting to shine a beautiful “Winter Light” on to this historic Llandudno landmark.
Within St Johns church we set up Studio due Citycolor architectural flood lights, to brightly illuminate the grand church window with a rich magenta colour.
When viewed from the street outside, the illuminated church window looked very impressive with the rich and intense light majestically radiating through it.
The Mythical Ox gobo projection
To the right of the beautifully illuminated St Johns church, lies the former Marks and Spencer building.
We illuminated the 1st floor walls above the former M&S shop in rich colour, using our Studio Due CItycolor architectural flood lights.
To add to illuminated atmosphere of the event, we projected a large gobo projection of the Mythical Ox – one of the mysterious creatures at the heart of the Llandudno Winter Light parade.
Illuminated Library at Llandudno Winter Light
On the opposite side of Mostyn Street in Llandudno, we used a combination of our Chauvet and Studio Due IP65 wash lights to illuminate the Victorian stone architecture and trees outside the Library building.
With an inviting atmosphere of rich reds and blues, the area outside the library building formed an attractive natural gathering place, as the crowds assembled to watch the Winter Light parade.
From outside the Library building the projections above Marks & Spenser, together with the brightly illuminated St Johns Church, created a rich and colourful backdrop to the Winter Light parade as it progressed through Llandudno.
A colourful array of illuminated buildings at Llandudno Winter Light
Further along Mostyn Street, we helped bring the backdrop of the Llandudno Winter Light parade to life with a bright and colourful array of illuminated buildings and trees.
Many of the buildings along Mostyn Street, were colourfully illuminated with our Chauvet and Studio Due exterior LED flood lights, whilst some of the buildings were brought to life with custom gobo light projections of the mythical creatures and objects represented in the parade.
The gobo projections included a mythical horned ox and a Viking ship, which were a central part of Winter Light – Chapter 1.
Some of these themed gobo projections were moving around on the buildings as the parade made its way past.
Many of the gobo designs were custom made for us especially for Llandudno Winter Light.
Illuminated trees and a giant mermaid at Holy Trinity Church.
To bring further Winter Light atmosphere to the theatrical parade, we illuminated various trees around the grounds of the historic Holy Trinity Church.
The trunks and leafless canopies of the trees were beautifully up-lit using our I-Pix and Chauvet Colorado outdoor LED lighting fixtures.
The tower of Holy Trinity Church was brightly illuminated in red using our Citycolor architectural flood lights.
To add to the illuminated backdrop of the Llandudno Winter Light parade and to highlight the mythical creatures central to the event, we projected a giant mermaid gobo projection on to the illuminated red tower of Holy Trinity Church.
This beautiful mermaid gobo was custom made for us especially for Llandudno Winter Light.
In addition to the mermaid, we also projected a custom made gobo of the Winter Light Viking long boat, onto the apex of the north transept of Holy Trinity Church.
The illuminated church, the up-lit trees and gobo projections added a rich and colourful atmosphere for the audience gathered along Mostyn Street for the Winter Light parade.
The event draws to a conclusion in North Western Gardens
In North Western Gardens for the finale of the Llandudno Winter Light Chapter 1 parade, we provided a small outdoor stage structure, together with our RCF line array PA system.
This was primarily for an Opera Singer from the Welsh National Opera to perform for the finale of the event.
To illuminate the outdoor stage area, we used our Chauvet and SGM outdoor lighting fixtures suspended from an overhead truss structure.
To help further bring the area near the outdoor stage to life, we up-lit various trees and colourfully illuminated the ornate public toilet building with a combination of our Chauvet exterior floods and IP65 LED battens.
As the event drew to its conclusion, the illuminated Ox and fire breathing Viking ship from the parade gathered around the outdoor stage area in North Western Gardens.
Then the talented opera singer gave a captivating and atmospheric performance, much to the appreciation of the audience.
We received many positive comments of appreciation from members of the public and we very much enjoyed being a part of the Llandudno Winter Light event.
It has been a great opportunity to show what a local North Wales based company can do and we very much look forward to being part of this wonderful event in the future.
