Portmeirion rainbow lighting – A wonderful new light of hope for North Wales
To express a heartfelt message of thanks to all of the amazing NHS heroes and key workers of North Wales – Illuminated Events were given the honour of lighting up the wonderful Italianate fantasy village of Portmeirion, with a spectacular display of multi-coloured rainbow lighting.
The iconic North Wales treasure – Portmeirion village – was lit up and transformed into a glowing multi-coloured rainbow of lighting and projection, bringing a wonderful new light of hope for the North Wales community.
A multi-coloured rainbow village
Built between 1925 and 1975 by Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion is a beautiful Mediteranian inspired fantasy village located in the heart of Snowdonia, near Penrhyndeudraeth and Porthmadog in Gwynedd, North Wales.
The Italianate styled village is made up of a collection of bright and fanciful buildings with a beautiful bandstand and central Piazza at its heart.
Consisting of a variety of quaint and colourful buildings in an array of architectural styles – the village of Portmeirion is a true gem of North Wales and has become very popular as a “must see” tourist destination, visited by many thousands each year.
The unique village featured as the set in the 1960s cult TV series – The Prisoner – starring Patrick McGoohan and it has been used for many other TV and film productions, including Doctor Who in 1976.
A fairy-tale village rainbow of light
With its spectacular scenery and beautifully unique architectural styling, Portmeirion is a truly amazing canvas to illuminate and as the day light started to fade the beautiful village was transformed into a giant rainbow of light.
Using our Studio Due, Chauvet and SGM outdoor LED lighting fixtures each building was lit up with a different colour of the rainbow.
As the dark of night drew in, the village of Portmeirion started to come to life with beautiful vibrant shades of colour like an illuminated scene from a fairy-tale.
Magnificent rich coloured rainbows of light illuminated the entire village – creating a beautiful beacon of hope and proudly sending out a symbolic message through illumination, to thank the amazing staff of the NHS – and all of the Key workers of North Wales.

Portmeirion Village looked like a scene from a fairytale
The much treasured, wonderful North Wales village of Portmeirion glowed vibrantly with a spectacular rainbow of rich coloured lighting – and looked like a scene straight out of a fairytale
What a beautiful way to say thank you to the amazing staff of the NHS – and all of the Key workers of North Wales.
An outdoor projection message of thanks
To complement the beautiful rainbow of multi-coloured lighting all around the village, we used a 10000 lumen Panasonic HD projector, to create a beautiful outdoor projection image on the wall next to the bandstand in the central piazza.
The outdoor projection image said “Diolch” (Welsh for thank you) together with an image of a heart, the symbol of love.
The projection image on the wall to the side of the bandstand was a symbolic message of heartfelt thanks, proudly dedicated to all of the amazing NHS staff and key workers of North Wales.
Illuminated Events would like to say a special thanks to all at Portmeirion Village, for this unique illumination experience.
We very much enjoyed illuminating this beautiful and iconic North Wales treasure.
We also wish to extend our sincere gratitude to the volunteers who gave their time and helped to make this project a great success.
