Caernarfon Castle rainbow lighting – A Positive beacon of hope for North Wales
To say a heartfelt message of thanks to all of the amazing NHS heroes and key workers of North Wales, Illuminated Events lit up the walls of Caernarfon Castle with a huge multi-coloured rainbow of light.
On behalf of CADW, Caernarfon Town Council, Caernarfon Hub and The Harbour Trust – the iconic North Wales landmark was transformed into a beautiful multi-coloured rainbow of lights and projection, to become a positive beacon of hope for the North Wales community.
A multi-coloured castle of ancient legend
Built in the 13th Century, Caernarfon Castle is recognised as one of the finest castles in Wales.
Now in the care of CADW – Caernarfon Castle is a Grade 1 listed building and World Heritage site of great importance, located at the mouth of the River Seiont in Gwynedd, North Wales.
The historic town of Caernarfon was once a Roman settlement and is enshrined in ancient myth and folklore.
In the Mabinogion – one such ancient Welsh folklore legend about Macsen Wledig, recounts a story about the dreams of a Roman emperor – who travelled to a faraway land where he was greeted with a magnificent, multi-coloured castle.
Following his dream, he sent out emissaries to scour the globe, to find again this magnificent place of his dreams – Finally upon their return, they identified the place as Caernarfon.
A modern rainbow of light at Caernarfon Castle
With its’ magnificent architecture and rich history Caernarfon Castle made a perfect canvas for us to illuminate.
Using our outdoor LED lighting fixtures, Caernarfon Castle was transformed in to a giant rainbow of light, reminiscent of the ancient multi-coloured castle from the mythical dreams of Macsen Wledig.
Now in our modern times the giant rainbow of light, wrapping around Caernarfon Castle stood as a positive beacon of hope – proudly sending out a symbolic message through illumination, to thank the amazing staff of the NHS – and all of the Key workers of North Wales.

A positive beacon of hope
The much treasured, historic North Wales landmark of Caernarfon Castle glowed vibrantly with a rainbow of rich coloured lights and looked like a scene straight out of Macsen Wledig’s mythical dream.
What a beautiful way to say thank you to the amazing staff of the NHS – and all of the Key workers of North Wales.
A message of thanks with a giant outdoor projection image
To complement the beautiful rainbow of multi-coloured lighting, we used our 20,000 lumen Barco HD projectors, housed in our weatherproof outdoor projection towers, to deliver a series of huge outdoor projection mapped images on to the walls of the iconic Caernarfon Castle.
Using simple projection mapping, the giant outdoor projection images could be seen clearly from a great distance away.
One of the walls of Caernarfon Castle contained a giant outdoor projection image of the Welsh dragon and above it the Welsh word “Diolch”.
The adjacent wall of the building contained an equally huge outdoor projection image of the map of Wales next to the English word “Thank you”.
Finally, another huge wall of the castle building contained a massive outdoor projection image of a heart, the symbol of love.
The bilingual projection mapped images on the walls of Caernarfon Castle were a symbolic message of heartfelt thanks, proudly dedicated to all of the amazing NHS staff and key workers of North Wales.
Illuminated Events would like to say a special thanks to CADW, Caernarfon Harbour Trust, Caernarfon Town Council, Caernarfon Hub, Corvus Security and Maxplant Generators, for their important contributions to this project.
